Australian Financial Review’s The Best Lawyers in Australia 2027.

This year, Simon Couper KC and Patrick O’Shea KC have each been awarded the highly regarded “Lawyer of the Year” distinction. This honour is awarded to a single lawyer in each practice area and geographic region, based on the highest peer feedback, underscoring the significance of their achievement. Simon was recognised in Insolvency and Reorganisation Law, and Patrick in Construction and Infrastructure Law.

The LTI nine-month post-graduate training program, closely resembling the Professional Legal Training courses taken by Australian graduates seeking admission to the bar, is recognised for its commitment to cultivating legal expertise in PNG.

The Workshop, now marking its thirteenth year, originated through the leadership of Chief Justice and Chairman of the LTI Council, Sir Salamo Injia, in collaboration with Justice Logan, John Bond QC (as his Honour then was) and Mal Varitimos CBE KC back in 2013. Their collective vision aimed to address PNG’s increasing demand for proficient commercial lawyers.

The Workshop is developed and overseen by Senior and Junior Counsel, along with members of the Judiciary, working in close consultation with LTI staff. The curriculum is wide-ranging, spanning from preparation of urgent interlocutory applications to the art of mediating commercial cases.

While undoubtedly invaluable for the students who participate, the Workshop serves as a testament to the commitment of the members of the Bar Association of Queensland and the Judiciary, who contribute to its enduring success.
