North Quarter Lane Chambers has been a major stakeholder in the Moot competition from its inception in 2014, together with international law firms Allens-Linklaters and Ashurst and the Indigenous Lawyers Association of Queensland (ILAQ). The competition is organised in collaboration with the Queensland Judiciary and the participating universities. 

The 2026 Final was held in the Banco Court and showcased teams from the University of Queensland and Bond University. The judging panel included the Honourable Chief Justice Helen Bowskill of the Supreme Court of Queensland, the Honourable President Debra Mullins AO of the Queensland Court of Appeal, and the Honourable Justice Lincoln Crowley of the Supreme Court of Queensland.

The LTI nine-month post-graduate training program, closely resembling the Professional Legal Training courses taken by Australian graduates seeking admission to the bar, is recognised for its commitment to cultivating legal expertise in PNG.

The Workshop, now marking its fourteenth year, originated through the leadership of Chief Justice and Chairman of the LTI Council, Sir Salamo Injia, in collaboration with Justice Logan, John Bond QC (as his Honour then was) and Mal Varitimos CBE KC back in 2013. Their collective vision aimed to address PNG’s increasing demand for proficient commercial lawyers.

The Workshop is developed and overseen by Senior and Junior Counsel, along with members of the Judiciary, working in close consultation with LTI staff. The curriculum is wide-ranging, spanning from preparation of urgent interlocutory applications to the art of mediating commercial cases.

While undoubtedly invaluable for the students who participate, the Workshop serves as a testament to the commitment of the members of the Bar Association of Queensland and the Judiciary, who contribute to its enduring success.

Throughout his career, Ron has exemplified the highest standards of advocacy, professionalism, and service, earning the respect of colleagues, clients, and the judiciary alike. His legacy extends far beyond the courtroom, reflecting a lifelong commitment to legal excellence, education, and the advancement of the profession.

Admitted as a solicitor in 1972, Ron established an exceptional career in commercial and insurance law, serving as Senior Partner and Chairman of Partners in Queensland at Minter Ellison before being called to the Bar in 2005. Appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2015, he developed a highly respected commercial practice with special expertise in insurance law. Alongside his practice, Ron has made an enduring contribution to the profession through leadership roles with the Queensland Law Society, the Law Council of Australia, and the Bar Association of Queensland, particularly in the areas of legal ethics and professional standards.

Ron’s contribution to legal scholarship has been equally significant. As co-author of The Law of Liability Insurance, now in its fourth edition, and through articles cited by the High Court of Australia, he has helped shape the development and understanding of insurance law in Australia. A passionate educator, Ron has also devoted many years to teaching and mentoring the next generation of lawyers through his work with universities and the profession.

As Ron concludes this remarkable chapter, the members and staff of North Quarter Lane Chambers extend their sincere thanks for his outstanding contribution to Chambers, the Bar, and the broader legal profession. His lively and inventive sense of humour will be particularly missed. We wish him every happiness, good health, and success in his well-earned retirement.
